BIO.

Zoe Young is an Australian Painter. Two time Archibald Prize finalist, with an upcoming show in London, Young is a rising talent. Trained at the National Art School in Sydney, Young graduated in Sculpture under Ron Robertson-Swann, an apprentice of Henry Moore. Applying modernist sculpture techniques to portraiture and still life painting, Young creates works that, although nostalgic, domestic and unapologetically feminine  in subject matter, works are built upon solid structural foundations that reveal picture planes that curve and block as sculpture does. Following Euan Uglows approach to making marks, the colour and tone, are mixed, considered and carved with conviction at the easel.

Since Graduating, Young has had two children, bringing structure, maturity and purpose to her practice.  Reg, a Gardener, brings a great deal of her subject matter to the studio - Zucchinni's, Plums and Magnolias, to name a few. The studio is kept warm by an Aga Stove and Young is currently bringing her mother's recipes back to life through painting. The drive to distil the beauty and essence of the moment is at the core of Young's intentions.

ARTIST STATEMENT

In the studio I endeavour to make an honest a facsimile of the world,  wrestling delicately with my own instincts and navigating them towards an image, in the dark, with only one light on a canvas. Driven by the instinct of sometimes folly intuition, embracing the very long, argumentative, spirited and enlightening conversation between artists. We talk in pictures to each other, between generations and cultures, like a π machine. I have also grown to love the space, time, oasis  that my studio is. Cultivating discipline over the years, I now enjoy the challenges that every painting has to be resolved, more often than not. The journey is my hunt, the image my prey.
